Did You Know? Surprising Facts about Feet

Your feet—they carry your whole body, they take you where you want to go, they make it possible to dance, play sports, climb and live the active life you love. You may take them for granted but at Edmond Norman Foot & Ankle we want to share some facts about feet that may surprise you and help you appreciate them even more:

  • 25% of all the bones in your body are in your feet—52 in total for both feet
  • An average person will walk approximately 115,000 miles in a lifetime–more than 4 times around the earth
  • Women have foot problems four times more often than men
  • The sweat glands in your feet produce ½ pint of perspiration every day
  • During an average day of walking your feet can experience forces equaling 100’s of tons—about the same as a fully loaded cement truck
  • About 75% of Americans will experience a foot problem at some point in their lives
  • The average male walks about 3 miles less each day than the average woman
  • The foot contains 33 joints, 107 ligaments and 19 muscles
  • The average shoe size has gone up two sizes in four decades
  • Fingernails grow faster in during teen years, hot weather and pregnancy and it can take up to 6 months to grow a whole new nail
  • The pressure on feet when running can be up to 4 times your body weight

Of course, as amazing as your feet are, they still need good care in order to continue to do the great job they do. If you are experiencing any pain or discomfort in your feet, be sure to contact our Edmond or Norman office for an appointment and let our board certified foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. A. Bil Buksh examine your feet and make recommendations to keep them healthy for years to come.
