The Painful Problem of Neuropathy

A common condition that we at Edmond Norman Foot & Ankle treat is neuropathy. Neuropathy is basically nerve damage that results in pain and discomfort in your feet and ankles. In addition to pain, symptoms of neuropathy can include: burning, cramps, tingling, muscle weakness, numbness, loss of sensation, difficulty bending and stretching toes, ankles and other foot joints. Often, the symptoms will get worse with activity.

What’s Causing It?

Neuropathy can be the result of many different conditions, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Degenerative joint disease
  • Trauma
  • Lower back problems
  • Alcoholism
  • Previous surgeries or injuries
  • Genetics

Our board certified foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. A. Bil Buksh will work first to determine the cause of your neuropathy if it is not already known. In addition to a complete physical examination of your feet and getting your medical history, the foot doctor may use nerve conduction studies, MRI or other imaging studies, diagnostic nerve blocks or epidermal nerve density biopsies to pinpoint the exact cause of your neuropathy.

Treatment Options

The proper method for treating your neuropathy will depend in part on the underlying cause. Treatment options include medication, electrical modalities and surgical nerve decompression. Many of these are available at our Edmond and Norman offices. In some cases custom orthotic inserts for your shoes can also help relieve pain by shifting pressure away from sensitive areas and keeping your foot properly positioned. If your neuropathy is related to a disease or other non-podiatric condition the foot doctor will coordinate with the other care you are receiving to ensure that everything possible is done to relieve your foot pain. The first step in getting relief is making an appointment to get your nerve pain evaluated. At Edmond Norman Foot & Ankle we pride ourselves on offering the leading cutting edge treatment options for neuropathy in the Oklahoma City area.
