A new study published by the British Journal of Foot Medicine shows that custom orthotics can reduce the risk of lower extremity injuries by 28% and the risk of stress fractures by an impressive 41%. At Edmond Norman Foot & Ankle we have seen many patients benefit from orthotic devices. Not only can they help prevent injuries, custom orthotics can decrease pain and increase performance in amateur and serious athletes alike.
What are Orthotics?
Orthotics are footwear inserts. Prescription orthotics are custom made to fit an individual patient’s foot structure, gait and podiatric condition. They can be constructed from a mold produced from a plaster cast of the foot or using scans that provide a computerized analysis of the foot for an orthotic laboratory to use to create the custom orthotic. Orthotics are produced in a variety of shapes and materials depending on the specific correction required for the foot.
Who Can Benefit from Orthotics?
Our board certified foot and ankle surgeon, Dr. A. Bil Buksh, has prescribed orthotics for a number of foot and ankle conditions, including: high arches, flat feet, bunions, hammertoe, claw toe, heel pain, corns, calluses, in- or out-toeing, chronic turf toe, and neuropathic ulcerations. There are two main types of orthotics, accommodative and functional. Accommodative orthotics provide cushioning and extra support to reduce stress on problem areas and increase comfort. Functional orthotics are used to help with pain and/or problems associated with foot and ankle motion.
