7 Foot Nerve Conditions: The Myriad Culprits of Numbness, Pain, and Tingling
Nerve conditions and conditions that affect the nerves are two separate worlds. However, for the sake of this article, they are all in the same category, much like a jumbled, nervous mess.
Today, we at Edmond Norman Foot and Ankle are sharing several of these conditions, ranging from a cardiovascular, skeletal, or digestive basis, including peripheral artery disease, Raynaud’s disease, metatarsalgia, and more.
Peripheral Artery Disease
PAD is a condition that occurs when the legs’ arteries constrict blood flow, which can lead to numbness, tingling, and pain in the feet. Sometimes, PAD can even cause tissue damage and necessitate amputation.
Raynaud’s Disease
October is Raynaud’s Disease Awareness Month, so it’s only appropriate to include this cooler weather phenomenon.
Raynaud’s causes the blood vessels in the fingers and toes to constrict in response to cold temperatures or emotional stress. This can lead to numbness, tingling, and coldness in the extremities. In severe cases, the affected areas may turn white or blue.
Neuropathy
As discussed in the past, neuropathy affects the nerves, which directly contributes to numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness. There are several types of neuropathies, including non-diabetic neuropathy, which can be caused by factors like injury or medication.
Neuroma
A neuroma is another common (though harmless) growth of nerve tissue that can occur in the feet. Morton’s neuroma is a common type of neuroma that affects the nerves between the toes.
Metatarsalgia
Often mistaken for Morton’s Neuroma, metatarsalgia is a condition that causes pain in the ball of the foot. It can be caused by nerve compression, muscle imbalance, or foot deformities such as bunions.
Classic, Chronic Pain Conditions
Conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis can cause joint pain and stiffness. This is because the nerves become damaged by the inflammation surrounding the affected joints.
Similarly, Fibromyalgia is suggested to be a result of small nerve fiber deterioration, thereby leading to that classic pain.
