As we’ve mentioned before, foot and ankle pain are common concerns. They’re often attributed to complications that are well understood, too, such as plantar fasciitis. Yet what if the pain feels more like burning, tingling, or numbness rather than a sharp ache? For many, these are puzzling sensations that go well beyond the typical symptoms and diagnoses they’re familiar with.
In such cases, the culprit could be a form of nerve pain. For this post, Edmond Norman Foot & Ankle will demystify the concept for patients and the community at large, listing common characteristics, symptoms to watch for, and treatments that work well along the way.
What Makes Nerve Pain Happen?
Several conditions can cause nerve pain, and we’ve mentioned one of them already: Tarsal tunnel syndrome.
- Similar to carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist, this condition arises when the tibial nerve, running along the inner ankle and into the foot, gets compressed.
- Said compression can lead to a burning, tingling, or numb feeling in the heel and sole.
Another culprit is known as Baxter’s nerve entrapment.
- This lesser-known condition involves compression of the inferior calcaneal nerve, located on the inner side of the heel.
- Similar to tarsal tunnel syndrome, Baxter’s nerve entrapment can cause burning, tingling, or numbness in the heel.
How Is Nerve Pain Diagnosed?
Diagnosing nerve pain in the heel often involves a physical exam to assess tenderness, followed by a comprehensive review of symptoms.
In some cases, imaging tests like X-rays may be necessary to rule out other causes.
Is There Treatment Available?
Traditional treatment for nerve pain in the heel often starts with conservative measures.
- These include activity modification, anti-inflammatory medication, orthotics, and physical therapy.
- Injections and even surgery may be considered in more severe cases.
However, there’s also an innovative new option gaining traction: Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS).
- PNS uses a small, implanted device to deliver mild electrical pulses to the affected nerve.
- This disrupts pain signals, offering pain relief without medications or surgery. Studies have shown PNS to be effective in managing chronic neuropathic pain, including in the heel.
